SNOWMOBILE TRAIL FUNDS WILL BE $1 MILLION SHORT FOR 2010 SEASON

0

From MSA Website

There will be a $1 million short fall in the Michigan Snowmobile Trail Improvement Fund for the 2009-10 season. That harsh reality has led MSA to ask that legislators approve a trail permit fee increase.

MSA would like to first assure you that Michigan snowmobile trails will be groomed to the standards you have become accustomed to during the upcoming 2008-09 season. There is adequate funding in the Michigan Trail Improvement Fund to groom this season. However, grooming beyond this season is in serious jeopardy.

The cold, hard truth is that the 2008-09 season will be the last season for the smooth trails you have come to count on in Michigan if a trail permit increase is not approved by state legislators before the end of this legislative session in mid-December. Revenue from our trail permits and registrations is not keeping pace with the rising costs to groom and maintain our more than 6,500 miles of snowmobile trails.

We did everything we could last year to make sure there was a funding carry over for this season’s grooming. We knew there wasn’t enough money coming in to keep pace with spending, so we worked hard to make sure we had a fund balance to carry over this year. We have “starved” the program to the point that we just can’t do it any longer. The endless cycle of cutting to carry over money for the following season is going to result in major problems

Keweenaw Peninsula Snowmobiling – Went up to Copper Harbor area the last weekend in Feb. You would not believe the snow. Unbelievable!!! The Keweenaw Peninsula is a great place. Lot of places to go and wonderful scenery. A lot of good restaurants as well The Library restaurant in Houghton (Mich Tec) had excellent food. Stayed at Centennial Cottages in Calumet.

Cadillac Area Snowmobiling — 4 of us rode this past Friday & Saturday in your (Cadillac) area. Best and most scenic trails all over up there! Irons was toast, but all the rest were in excellent shape! We met groomers day and night. We had been to the UP, then Indian River before we took our last snowmobile trip to your area last weekend. We will be making your area our home base for snowmobiling in the future. We put on 203 miles by trail Sat. & Sat. night! NO complaints from any of us, and we will be with a larger group from now on. We found several places with good food and atmosphere up there, too! We buy a lot of gas and eat a lot of food! :)

Thank you for giving us a place to dream about until next season! — From The Cadillac Message Board

I still love the Benzie area to snowmobile. They did a great job with the trails this year. Riding to Money (Plat River Inn) in Honor is also great for Breakfast or Lunch. Ride in and warm up at the fire place. The Money brothers always make you feel at home. Riding in the Benzie area is great because the trails are not so crowded. — Linda
